History of Bengal Cinema and Mahanayak, 49th Kolkata International Book Fair, 2026

Curator's Note

The “History of Bengali Cinema and Mahanayak” exhibition is a landmark cultural showcase featured at the 49th International Kolkata Book Fair, one of the world’s largest non-trade book fairs. This specially curated exhibition commemorates the birth centenary of Uttam Kumar, Bengal’s legendary film icon fondly known as Mahanayak, and celebrates the rich heritage of Bengali cinema. Organised by the Art Alinda Archive in collaboration with Kolkata Kathokata, and curated by Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya, the exhibition space is designed to resemble a classic single-screen movie theatre, inviting visitors into a nostalgic cinematic journey. Through a chronological narrative of Bengali cinema’s evolution, the exhibition presents rare and previously unseen artefacts including vintage photographs, film stills, letters, posters, and costumes worn by Uttam Kumar himself. Visitors can also view unique memorabilia such as shooting props including the dotara from Hirak Rajar Deshe and lobby cards from classic films, offering an immersive glimpse into the art, craft, and cultural impact of Bengali filmmaking. Celebrating both mainstream popularity and artistic excellence, the exhibit not only honours Uttam Kumar’s iconic career but also reflects on the broader history of Bengal’s cinematic legacy, making it a must-see attraction for film.
