Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya is a luminary in the world of art curation and literature. Bore in bally, nestled in the culturally vibrant district of Howrah, West Bengal. After graduating Calcutta University, Jyotirmoy began his professional journey in the realm of academia as a teacher. However, driven by an innate passion for exploring broader horizons, he soon moved to Bangalore to transition to the corporate sector. It was during this time that Jyotirmoy’s appreciation for art found a new dimension.
He immersed himself in the rich past of Bengal’s art culture. He began his career as a curator and started exhibiting art independently. This phase marks the beginning of his journey as a collector and connoisseur, igniting a lifelong commitment to preserve and promote India’s artistry.
Upon his return home to Kolkata, Jyotirmoy turned his focus entirely towards art and literature, carving a niche for himself as a distinguished curator and author. His expertise spans the works of legendary artists such as Jamini Roy, Akbar Padamsee, Himmat Shah, Akkitham Narayanan, Jogen Chowdhury, Lalu Prasad Shaw and many more luminaries. His exhibitions have not only showcased their brilliance but also brought nuanced perspective to their contributions in the much broader context of Indian art.
One of the most significant periods of his career was the time he spent with the renowned film actor and writer, Soumitra Chatterjee. They collaborated closely, which kindled his passion for showing art through the medium of films. Another significant influence in his career was Amala Shankar. These artists have inspired him to explore the realm of filmmaking. He has directed acclaimed biographical documentaries about iconic artists, including Manu Parekh, Himmat Shah, Rabin Mondal, and Akkitham Narayanan. These documentaries offer viewers an intimate glimpse into the lives and inspirations of these remarkable individuals.
As a writer and editor, Jyotirmoy has enriched the field of art history with his meticulous research and storytelling. Each book is a testament to his dedication to documenting and commemorating the multifaceted legacy of Bengal’s artistry. His publications include seminal works such as:
